WHEN A KISS CAN KILL - RAVAL’S CURRY FOR A CAUSE

JUNE 5-10, 2010

“WHEN a kiss can kill.”

It sounds like the title of a bad 1950s B-movie.

It’s not.  But for many those five words are no less horrifying.

They are the parents of babies and young children born without an immune system. And for them a kiss could, quite literally, kill their child.

For children born without an immune system cannot fight the simplest of illnesses. Even the ‘common’ cold could prove fatal.

Their only chance of survival is to undergo a full bone marrow transplant.

Once, these babies would have died within a year of birth.

But the good news is that thanks to pioneering work taking place at Newcastle General Hospital, these babies and children now have the chance to not only be cured, but lead normal and fulfilling lives.

Founded 20 years ago, Newcastle’s Bone Marrow Transplant Unit has gone from strength-to-strength. In the last five years alone, survival rates have risen from 50% to over 80%.

But none of this would be possible without the support of the Bubble Foundation UK, which raises funds for medical equipment, toys and educational aids, welfare of the babies, children and their families, and importantly, to fund the research required at this cutting edge of paediatric practice.

The North East has a unit it can be truly proud of. But it needs your financial support.

Which is why Avi Malik of the award-winning Raval restaurant in Gateshead has organised a special fundraising week between June 5-10.

Called Curry for a Cause, the public is being asked to eat their way around India at four sumptuous banquets being held at Raval in aid of the Bubble Foundation UK, whose president is the Sunderland-born agony aunt, TV personality and author, Denise Robertson.

  • Take an exotic trip to Goa on June 7
  • Immerse yourself in the Punjab on June 8
  • Revel in the richness of Bengal on June 9
  • Dine like a president on June 10 at a very special VIP banquet in the company of Bubble Foundation UK president and TV personality Denise Robertson and friends.

Raval will be adding its own stunning twist to the menu served by Barack Obama to Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on his state visit to Washington last November.

All profits to go to the Bubble Foundation UK based at Newcastle General Hospital.

Curry for a Cause is supported by Newcastle City Council.
