Lobster tail halves with mango salsa, plated with green herb sauce and a small garnish on a white dish.

From India’s Coastal Flavours to the Tyne

Some dishes become part of a restaurant’s identity. Others have been there from the very beginning.

Lobster & Mango is both.

One of Raval’s original dishes when we opened beside the Tyne Bridge in 2007, Lobster & Mango has remained on our menu ever since.

Seared lobster, fresh mango, delicate spice and bright citrus come together in a dish that has helped define Raval’s approach to Indian food for nearly two decades.

Lobster, Mango and the Flavours of India

India’s relationship with seafood stretches across thousands of miles of coastline, where fish and shellfish form an important part of many regional food traditions.

Mango has an equally deep connection with Indian cuisine, used across the subcontinent in countless different ways.

At Raval, those influences come together in our own interpretation.

We pair seared lobster with fresh mango, delicate spice and bright citrus, allowing the character and quality of the ingredients to remain at the heart of the dish.

The result is fresh, vibrant and distinctly Raval.

Why Lobster & Mango?

The character of the dish comes from balance and contrast.

The richness of lobster meets the freshness and natural sweetness of mango. Citrus brings brightness, while carefully judged spice adds warmth and complexity without overwhelming the seafood.

Each element has a purpose.

Indian cooking can be bold, deeply spiced and comforting. It can also be delicate, fresh and ingredient-led.

Lobster & Mango expresses that side of Indian cuisine.

An Original Raval Dish Since 2007

Menus evolve. Tastes change. New dishes arrive.

Lobster & Mango has remained.

It has been part of Raval since the restaurant first opened in NewcastleGateshead in 2007, making it one of the longest-standing dishes on our menu.

Its longevity says something about both the dish and Raval itself: quality ingredients, carefully judged spice and the regional and coastal influences that continue to shape our cooking.

For returning guests, it has also become part of their own Raval story.

Beyond the Familiar Indian Restaurant

Britain’s relationship with Indian food has often been told through curry, but India’s food traditions extend far beyond any single style of dish.

At Raval, some of our signature dishes tell very different parts of that story.

Maska Chicken Tikka Masala brings together inspiration from Delhi, Britain’s enduring love of curry and the heat of the tandoor.

Darjeeling Lamb Cutlets combines grilled lamb with a base of curried potato, ginger, coriander and warming spice.

Assam Tandoori King Prawn brings king prawns, yoghurt and coastal spice together with the character of high-temperature cooking.

And Lobster & Mango represents another side of Raval — seafood, freshness, fruit, citrus and delicate spice.

Together, they offer different ways to discover the breadth of Indian cooking.

Coastal Indian Inspiration in Newcastle

Raval has explored India’s regional and coastal cuisine from our home beside the Tyne Bridge since 2007.

Here in the North East of England, with its own strong relationship with the coast and the sea, seafood has naturally become an important part of the Raval menu.

Lobster & Mango captures that connection particularly well: Indian inspiration, carefully prepared seafood and an original Raval dish that has been served in NewcastleGateshead from the very beginning.

Nearly two decades later, it remains on our menu.
